FAQ

What is a namecolor in Pokémon Showdown?

In Pokémon Showdown, every username is automatically assigned a display color based on the characters in the name. This color is computed deterministically by the PS namecolor algorithm: meaning two users with the same username always see the same color. There is no manual color picker in Showdown itself.

How does the Pokémon Showdown namecolor algorithm work?

Pokémon Showdown hashes the lowercase, stripped user ID. Hue, saturation and lightness are also derived from the hash, then lightness is adjusted for readability. Because the result is deterministic, candidate user IDs can be tested against a target color.

How do I get a specific color for my Pokémon Showdown username?

Enter a target hex color, then click Search. The tool tests candidate user IDs and returns computed colors that meet the selected threshold. It does not check registration status or promise that a candidate can be registered.

Can I choose any color for my Pokémon Showdown username?

Not exactly. Pokémon Showdown assigns colors based on the namecolor algorithm, so you cannot freely pick any color. However, by searching for usernames whose computed color matches your target, you can effectively choose a username that displays in approximately the color you want.
