FAQ

What is a namecolor in Pokémon Showdown?

In Pokémon Showdown, every username is automatically assigned a display color based on the characters in the name. This color is computed deterministically by the PS namecolor algorithm — meaning two users with the same username always see the same color. There is no manual color picker in Showdown itself.

How does the Pokémon Showdown namecolor algorithm work?

Pokémon Showdown derives a username's color by hashing the lowercase, stripped version of the username into an HSL color value. The hue is determined by the hash of the name, while saturation and lightness are fixed to ensure readability. Because the algorithm is deterministic, you can reverse-search for names that produce a specific target color.

How do I get a specific color for my Pokémon Showdown username?

Use this namecolor finder: enter your desired hex color or pick it with the color picker, then click Search. The tool runs the PS namecolor algorithm in reverse to find real usernames that will display in (or close to) your chosen color. Lower the precision slider to get more results at the cost of exact color match.

Can I choose any color for my Pokémon Showdown username?

Not exactly. Pokémon Showdown assigns colors based on the namecolor algorithm, so you cannot freely pick any color. However, by searching for usernames whose computed color matches your target, you can effectively choose a username that displays in approximately the color you want.
