Gen 6 OU is Smogon's main singles format for Pokémon X & Y and ORAS (Omega Ruby & Alpha Sapphire). It introduced Mega Evolutions — held-item-based permanent transformations — and the Fairy type, which countered the dominant Dragon type. Battles are 6v6 singles with one Mega Evolution allowed per team.
Gen 6 OU top threats include Mega Lopunny, Mega Sableye, Landorus-Therian, Clefable, Garchomp, Heatran, Talonflame, Azumarill, and Excadrill. Mega Evolutions are central to the metagame — nearly every top team features one. Clefable's Unaware and Magic Guard abilities made it the definitive defensive backbone of the tier.
Each team can have one Pokémon holding a Mega Stone. On any turn, you can trigger that Pokémon's Mega Evolution, permanently transforming it for the rest of the battle with increased stats and sometimes a changed ability or typing. Only one Mega Evolution per team is allowed. Choosing which Mega to use and when to evolve are key strategic decisions.
Start by choosing your Mega Evolution — it defines your team's gameplan. Offensive Megas like Mega Lopunny and Mega Medicham pair well with pivots and hazard setters. Defensive Megas like Mega Sableye pair well with bulky offense. Add Landorus-T for Stealth Rock and pivoting, Clefable for Wish support, and coverage for your Mega's counters. Check the sample teams above for current Gen 6 structures.
Pokémon banned from Gen 6 OU include Mega Kangaskhan (Parental Bond), Mega Mewtwo X and Y, Mega Rayquaza, Blaziken, Genesect, and others. Several Pokémon were banned specifically due to interactions with Mega Evolution or because they combined offense and bulk in ways that left no counterplay.
